چکیده

Background Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is known to be associated with all-cause mortality and morbidity. There is a strong relationship between LV mass and afterload but the influence of aortic vasculopathy on ventricular geometry is less well understood. Aortic stiffness (AS) is one of the earliest detectable signs of the changes that alter the structure and function of the vessel wall, and may precede the onset of systemic hypertension and ventricular hypertrophy. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in LV geometry associated with aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) using 3D cardiac imaging of the heart

Correlation of pulse wave velocity with left ventricular mass in patients with hypertension once blood pressure has been normalized

Vascular stiffness has been proposed as a simple method to assess arterial loading conditions of the heart which induce left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). There is some controversy as to whether the relationship of vascular stiffness to LVH is independent of blood pressure, and which measurement of arterial stiffness, augmentation index (AI) or pulse wave velocity (PWV) is best. Carotid pulse ...

Arterial stiffness is associated with left atrial size in hypertensive patients.

BACKGROUND Arterial stiffness is a strong predictor of cardiovascular events and particularly of stroke. A likely explanation is the development of atherosclerotic lesions at the carotid level, favored by increased local stiffness. Another possibility involves cardiac consequences of aortic stiffness and particularly left atrial dilatation with its subsequent risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) an...

Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity Is the Only Index of Arterial Stiffness That Correlates with a Mitral Valve Indices of Diastolic Dysfunction, but No Index Correlates with Left Atrial Size

The objective of this study was to determine the optimal assessment of arterial stiffness that relates to diastolic dysfunction. Forty-one patients had measurements of brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), ankle brachial index (ABI), pulse pressure (PP), and augmentation index (AIx). Diastolic dysfunction was evaluated by echocardiographic indi...

Blockade in Uremia

Blood pressure, echocardiography, and aortic and peripheral arterial pulse-wave velocity were studied in 40 hypertensive patients on long-term hemodialysis during a 24-week administration of nitrendipine (1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-4[m-nitrophenyl] -3,5-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid ethyl methylester) monotherapy. In a double-blind placebo-randomized study, nitrendipine effectively lowered the blood...

Editorial Commentary Arterial Stiffness and Left Ventricular Diastolic Function Does Sex Matter?

Diastolic heart failure with preserved systolic ejection fraction is becoming a major health burden and is responsible for 50% of heart failure hospital admissions. Arterial hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for diastolic dysfunction; however, systolic and diastolic blood pressures are the 2 extreme points of the arterial waveform. Arterial stiffness/elasticity derived from...
